SEO is an ever-changing game that requires us to always be learning the latest trends. These changes are driven by the algorithm updates that Google releases throughout the year. In fact, there were seven confirmed algorithm updates in 2019 alone.
Here at WPamplify, we are always changing the things that we do with our strategies to help your site increase its visibility online. As we enter the New Year, we have already started implementing new strategies.
These are the top SEO trends in 2020:
1. Featured Snippets
A featured snippet is information that appears above the 1st organic result. This position is often called “position 0”. In order to get into this position, you need to write sections in your content that Google can pull to answer questions.
When you organize your content with a question and a detailed answer to the question, it stands a chance to be pulled as a featured snippet. According to Google, snippets receive 54.68% of the clicks from searches.
2. Website Security
Keeping users safe was a big trend in 2019 and it is becoming even more important as we enter 2020. To activate the HTTPS protocol, you will need to have an SSL Certificate on every domain you own. Otherwise, a user may land on your site and see a warning that the website is not secure. This affects your bounce rate and credibility of your website.
All websites need this security feature, but especially those that are collecting personal information. Protecting their privacy is your responsibility.
3. SEO For Voice Search
More and more people are using the voice search feature on their devices whether it’s a phone, tv, iPad, or Echo. It’s important to write content in a conversational tone in order to get picked up by the queries people are speaking into their device.
When you are writing content for your website or blog, write as if you were talking with a close friend through text or email. The language would be casual and you wouldn’t sound like you were writing a book report. This style of writing is great for your SEO, but also overall engagement on your posts.
4. Mobile-First Indexing
If you dig into the analytics on your website, you’ll find that at least 74% (likely more) of your traffic is coming from phones. Is your website mobile friendly? Meaning the site is formatted differently with a hamburger menu, call now button, and full-screen content. If you haven’t had your site updated in the last 5-10 years, there’s a good chance it’s not.
A site that isn’t useable from a phone or device will cause a high bounce rate. Not only that, in July of 2019, Google went to mobile-first indexing for all new sites or sites previously unknown. This means that they use the mobile version of the site as part of the determining factor in whether a site shows up on the first page of search results.
